Getting Involved

Volunteering

Whether as a subscribing friend or not, there are always opportunities to volunteer at Sun Rising. On site, these include:

  • filling the bird feeders
  • hay raking
  • pond clearing
  • tree planting
  • tree mulching
  • nature surveying
  • contributing cakes to the tea stall
  • helping with refreshments at events

Have a look at our Events page for upcoming dates.

The homemade chocolate cake to the right was made by a family specifically for our 2017 Open Day.

Away from Sun Rising, opportunities to help include ensuring there are plenty of Sun Rising leaflets where you feel they would be appropriate, such as your local funeral directors, perhaps the surgery or CAB, health food shop or natural therapy centre, a hospice or church community with which you are involved.

Perhaps your local WI, U3A, SCAN or other community group would be interested in having someone come to give a talk about Sun Rising.

Music

At Sun Rising we aim to hold a musical event every other year.  These are held in the Roundhouse or the Longhouse, and are usually free of charge in order to ensure all our families are able to come along.  As fundraisers for The Friends of Sun Rising, we have a marvellous refreshments stall, a raffle and/or tombola or other game, and our Friends stall selling jams, honey, cards, calendars and so on.  Music events have included recitals by a harpist, a violinist and a string quartet.  We have had lazy afternoon jazz, folk music and storytelling and a quartet of saxophones. Many of these musicians are connected to Sun Rising in one way or another, which makes their performance all the more special.

If you know of anyone who would be willing to give a performance in aid of the Friends, do let us know. We'd be keen to hear from them.

Talks, Walks and More

As well as music, we have had a wonderful run of fascinating talks, quizzes, presentations and nature walks, held in the Roundhouse, the Longhouse or the local village hall.  These are also essentially fundraising events, where entry is either by donation, by tickets sold, or by being a subscribing Friend.  So far we have had events focused on local history, barn owls, moths, spiders, small mammals, bees and more, some events including a walk around Sun Rising or the local landscape.

If you have any ideas for talks, or other fundraising ideas, do let us know.
